Rovinj, Croatia

June, 2006

Rovinj was a pleasant surprise.  It is a small town located in the Istria region of Croatia, which is a small peninsula up next to the Italian and Slovenian borders.  The town is small and has a lot of nice shops, a daily market (which we now know every town has), a great promenade with lots of cafes and ice cream.

Just across the bay are two islands, the so called Red Island and Katarina Island.  The Red Island is not red (unless you count the sunburns on the nudists butts).  Yes, there are A LOT of naked people in Croatia (sorry no pictures)  hanging out on the rocks around almost every island we visited.  Both islands have hotels on them and were small enough that you could walk around them in about 15 minutes.  We spent a half day on each. Katarina was our favorite since it was smaller and the hotel was more rustic.

On one day we took a short excursion to the city of Pula which had an amphitheater.  We also tried to visit Brijuni National Park where Tito liked to vacation but you had to take guided tours so we skipped it.

Our apartment was about 5 minutes out of town.  It had all the basics, was clean, air conditioned and had a nice pool.
